The basics of SEO can be broken down into 4 simple rules. Remember it is not the amount of traffic but the quality of traffic that makes SEO a viable marketing option for any size company.
Tip 1: SEO does not have to be an enigma wrapped up in a mystery.
When people think of SEO, the first thing that usually pops in their head is that this is going to be an unsolvable maze before they even start. But all mazes they usually have a beginning and an end. So lets put our first foot forward and start down the yellow brick road of SEO.
The first thing one must do is have web site that a search engine spider ( fancy way for saying algorythm ) can find. Let me go ahead and show you a trick just so you know what a spider has found on your site.

Tip 2: Make sure your customers find you for the right reasons.
Tip 2: Make sure your customers find you for the right reasons. Which boils down to make sure that they keyword phrases that people type in the search box will find you if what you have to offer is after the same goal.
The worst thing you can do is try to bring traffic to your web site to bring traffic. Remember we are growing up and it is time for people to know our character and what we stand for. Basically you want quality over quantity.

Tip 3: Get links from web sites similiar in topic to yours.
In order to ensure success over the long haul, one must get others to link to you. The best analogy is the one of a starting business that knows nobody within their area. In order for them to get new prospects they start to network. At first they meet a few people but as their business grows so does their network.
Search engines use the same concept. The more web sites that you have linked to you the more important you must be. Now realize, not all business contacts are the same. Their some people out there that know everybody and are better resources for you to attract new prospects than somebody that is just starting out. The same concept applies to links. Therefore all links are not created equal.
Here is some wisdom. Check out your competition and find out who links to them. You can use commands like this with Google >> link:www.magnetiks.com. Do not worry if you forget the command because all you have to do is click advanced search in all search engines and they will have a spot where you can put your url to check people that are backlinked to you or your competition.
They is a lot more than meets the eye with linking but this is the basic concept.

Tip 4: Create web pages that spiders can crawl easily.
The importance of this next step is missed by most websites. Why? Because you cannot see what a spider sees. Your eyes are trained to just see the website and it looks ok and there are no erros that popup it must be compliant. Wrong. Just right click and "View Souce" and you notice that there is alot more going underneath than you thought. If the html is well formed then a spider just crawls your site looking for the content, but if is not then sometimes the spider will just drop by and leave or at the minimum rank your page lower.
Now you ask the question "How do I check?"
Go to
http://validator.w3.org/
Once there then enter your url and see if you have errors. If you do then you are good to go, but if errors come up then you will need fix them. Therefore I say again:
Search engine spiders will rank your pages higher if you your pages are W3C HTML compliant.
