Term Definition
semantic indexingSemantic indexing is getting more and more important to search engines.

What exactly is semantic indexing and how does it influence your search engine rankings?

Semantic indexing means that search engines try to associate certain terms with concepts when indexing web pages. For example, Paris and Hilton are associated with a woman instead of a city and a hotel, Tiger and Woods are associated with golf.

How does this influence your search engine optimization activities?

If you want to succeed on Google then it is important that you show Google that your website is relevant to your topic. Here are some things that you can do to show search engines that your site is relevant:

  • Organize your content with sections with main topics. I look at like creating outline with roman numerals.
  • Make sure your urls match your content so the spider is already combining terms to give you the best results.
  • Inner linking to other pages that have to do with same topic gives your site more relevance by allowing the visitor to pick the path they want to go to learn more information. If you are creating a page on 'home rentals' you might want to create other pages like 'apartment home rental' or 'corporate home rentals' to extend your content to have more relevance to give the spider exactly the context you want it to receive.
  • Of course it is always nice to get others to link to your pages that semantically relevant to yours. Make sure you change the text links to give the spiders more to work with.

Make sure that the links are theme related to your site. Nothing like going to a site that has nothing to do with what you looking for. If you need to find out what others are doing look at there inbound links, this should give you a good starting point.

Like I always say never focus on one work or two keyword phrases. These people are sucking up information, but once they decide they know enought then they go for the 3 to 4 word phrases. Now if you show up on those pages your likely to get a sale or two.
