Search engines typically do one of the following to get page descriptions:
- use a description from a well-known and trusted directory (Yahoo! Directory, DMOZ, etc) for homepages of sites they have listed
- use the page meta description found in the pages meta tag
- attempt to extract a description from the page content (also known as a snippet)
- or any combination of the above
